Whenever I see a time-lapse video of a construction project on social media, I can’t help but stop scrolling and watch it to the end. There’s something captivating about seeing the hard work unfold, whether it’s a new build, a re-roof, a kitchen installation, or any other construction project.
Of course, time-lapse videos don’t really work for a marketing agency. As much as I love what we do, I doubt many people would be interested in watching hours of computer work condensed into a minute! But for construction and trade businesses, time-lapse videos can be a real game changer. They condense hours, days, or even months of effort into a few captivating minutes, allowing your clients to witness the transformation from start to finish.
In this post, I’ll guide you through creating stunning time-lapse videos that not only document your projects but also become powerful marketing assets.
Why time-lapse videos matter for construction businesses
Time-lapse videos are more than just eye-catching. They’re practical tools for:
Marketing and Promotion: Showcase your expertise and the scale of your work in a format that’s easy to share on your website, social media, and quotes.
Stakeholder Engagement: Provide clients and investors with a transparent, visual record of progress, building trust and excitement.
Project Management: Monitor site activity, identify bottlenecks, and keep your team and clients up to date.
Define your story
Before you start filming your video, decide what you want to highlight. Is it the complete build, a dramatic renovation, or a specific phase like foundation pouring or roofing? Knowing your story helps you plan camera placement and intervals.
Creating a time-lapse video on your phone using the built-in time-lapse mode
Most modern smartphones have time-lapse functionality built into their camera apps, allowing you to capture time-lapse videos directly.
On most iPhones, you'll find "Time-lapse" in the camera app's options. On Android, the Time-lapse option might be under ‘’More’’ on your camera options. Or you might need to switch to video mode first, then find "Hyperlapse" or "Time-lapse."
However, the built-in mode often has limited settings, primarily focusing on the duration and speed of the time-lapse.
Creating a time-lapse video on your phone using a dedicated time-lapse app
Using a dedicated time-lapse app offers more control and quality than the standard time-lapse function on a smartphone.
With a specialist app, you can customise settings like capture intervals, exposure, and playback speed to suit your project, and often save each frame for advanced editing and higher resolution output.
Many apps also include features tailored for construction, such as before-and-after comparisons, geolocation tagging, and easy sharing options, allowing you to create professional, engaging videos that truly showcase your work.
I would always recommend researching and reading reviews to find the app that best fits your needs.
Creating a time-lapse video on a camera or video camera
Many cameras, including DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and action cameras like GoPros, have built-in time-lapse modes or the ability to capture images at set intervals for later assembly into a time-lapse.
DSLR and Mirrorless Cameras: These cameras often have built-in intervalometers (a device that triggers the camera at set intervals) or time-lapse modes that allow you to set the interval between shots and the total duration.
Action Cameras: Cameras like GoPro have dedicated time-lapse modes that automatically stitch still images into a video file or save them as individual images for later editing.
Video Cameras: Many video cameras, including DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, have time-lapse modes that mimic an intervalometer.
Important tips to help create stunning time-laps videos
Use a tripod: A tripod is crucial for steady shots, especially for longer time-lapses.
Intervals: Longer intervals create faster-moving time-lapses. For construction, intervals between shots typically range from every 5 to 30 minutes, depending on how quickly changes occur.
Exposure: Adjust exposure settings to avoid over or underexposed footage.
Storage: Time-lapses can take up a lot of storage space, so ensure your phone or memory card has enough.
Power: Ensure your phone or camera is plugged in or has enough battery power for the duration of the time-lapse.
Pick the best angles: Select unobstructed, secure locations that cover key areas of your site. Multiple angles-such as ground-level, aerial, or even interior shots-add visual interest and help tell a more complete story.
Editing for Impact
Once you have completed filming your time-laps video, you can use editing software to remove redundant frames, smooth transitions, and highlight key milestones. Consider overlaying branded elements, captions, or key dates to provide context and reinforce your company’s identity.
Keep it Concise
Aim for a final video length of 1–3 minutes-long enough to showcase progress, and short enough to hold attention.
